Who’s that Addon!?: It’s Skinner!

March 18, 2010

Skinner... skinner!

If you don’t get the reference I’m going to cry. Seriously though, if you don’t understand the reference you WERE deprived as a child.

Alright, for those of you who have seen my UI, it has these two “bars” on the top and bottom of the screen. We’ve actually had a few variations of “black bars on-screen addon” to find the site, so I figure that obviously means someone is interested in figuring out what is going on in my UI. Today we will explore the Addon Skinner to better understand my insanity.

What is Skinner?

Skinner is actually a couple of Addons combined into “Skinner”. It includes Skinner and Viewports which are both fairly useful tools when it comes to making a custom UI. Skinner is fairly simple, it simply is a design that you make/color and will change every window in WoW to be that exact design. Obviously this is an Addon that “pretties” up your UI because honestly, we can ALL get fairly bored with Blizzard’s UI/designs.

The more useful portion of the Addon, however, is Viewports. Simply put, this basically allows you to take the screen from the normal full-screen mode and make it widescreen! Viewports allows you to control the width/height of the sides and bottom/top of your screen, meaning that you can stretch the screen to the point of it being a Widescreen view.

Widescreen, although it seems smaller, always allows you to see a LOT more of what goes on around you. You can still see everything you would normally see just fine, however you can see a lot more of what is happening to the left or right of you in a widescreen mode. Obviously being able to see more will help you in any single role you play in WoW. As a Tank you can see more of the Raid, as a Healer you can see where everyone is so you can position yourself better, and as DPS you will be able to avoid fire/void zones/ect.  a lot easier (Healers and Tanks included)!

So, basically what Skinner does (and is not limited too) is allow you to change the size of your screen and allow you to change the colors of the windows in WoW. For example my Character window is green and black as opposed to the normal Blizzard design.

Is this hard to configure?

I will be honest, it can be a pain in the ass to configure. The first time I ever worked with the Addon it took me about an hour to configure it to my liking, and even more time to get used to it. If you stick with it, I guarantee it will be a great addition to any UI! All you have to do is just fool around with the Addon until it fits your liking, and after that do a Raid or two to get used to the overall feel of the Addon since it does change your UI fairly signficantly.

How customizable is it?

VERY! You can have it do many different patterns/colors and even upload your own pictures to put as your skin. As I said before, it takes a bit of tinkering, but it is very customizable and useful.

Where can I find it?

Right here at!

Happy WoWing!

P.S. I hope to be writing a few more of these as the weeks go by to give you all a feel for some different Addons out there! It’s never a bad thing to try something new.
