The Death Knight Tank and You: Arthas is OURS!

February 4, 2010

“YES, DIE ARTHAS, BAHAHAHA!” screams a dreaming Elnoriah. Well, now you have black mailable evidence, congratulations!…

For anyone who has played Warcraft 3 Arthas is probably close to the top of your “Wanted” list, this is especially so for any of my students. As of this past Tuesday, not only do we have a new Arena Season, but more importantly, we can defeat Arthas and take our revenge!

Yes, as of Tuesday- The Dreamwalker encounter, Sindragosa, and The Lich King are all available for your to attempt to kill and eat their loots. So far, I have to give the Frozen Halls an A+. I’ve only done the trash and Dreamwalker, but so far it has been pretty badass, and much more fun to Tank than the Crimson Halls.

Enough of me yacking, let us discuss the meat of the mini-patch!

Death Knight Changes

Just kidding, there were not any Death Knight specific changes in the patch. Unless you are a DPSer, then there is a STR Ashen Verdict ring available for you to buy. Once again we are not even touched, which means 1) we are definitely stable and 2) definitely sexy!

For those of you who think we are a little bit underpowered as Tanks, (I may have to agree to a point) Blizzard will do whatever necessary tweaking there is to us once they can get an honest look at us in the Heroic fights. Let’s face it, that’s where we can see the true performance of the classes stretched to their limits!

VOA

With the release of T10 and S8 the new boss, Toravon- the Joke Watcher, has been released. Basically the fight is designed around a Tank and spank with a very mild case of Tank switching due to a stacking debuff. For the DPS there will be a frozen orb that gets launched into the Raid, which is also a joke.

Let me say this, our Bear Tank solo’d that shit with 17 stacks and I was able to DPS that fight. It was just pitiful, but it will get you T10 or S8 gear so it is certainly worth the 3 minutes of your life to down the boss.

That is not even an exaggeration, and if anyone wipes on that you probably will want to just facepalm and leave the group.

Heroics

Due to the massive increase in people being able to get good gear (T9 and ilvl 245s) the Heroics have felt rather slow and chunky. Take a look at Svala Sorrowgrave casting 3 of her ritual of swords. This used to be a fine amount when DPS could push 2k DPS max, but now we’re seeing numbers like 6k in Heroics and the rituals are coming in one right after another due to the ridiculous DPS increase. Now that she only does 1 it is a hell of a lot easier to deal with.

Is it a nerf? In a sense I suppose you could call it that, but I would rather name it a “change in plans” for Blizzard. Regardless, the fights got easier, the escorts got faster, and you can zone into POS during boss encounters. What more could you want!?

In addition for the insta-ques for being Death Knight Tanks (I swear it’s only us!!) we now get heroics that go even faster. This makes it easier to gear up or easier to get that single heroic for Frosts out of the way.

Cryptmaker, it may be BIS for Warriors, but it's also delicious for TPS! Who knew!?

T10 and Death Knight Tanks

Basically when you set foot into ICC you gain the debuff that “grants” you -20% dodge. This is used to give Tanks a bit more of a challenge without increasing boss damage too much, and to also screw with our heads. However, because of this it is pretty obvious the itemization changes in Tanking gear.

We no longer see much dodge in gear, rather that dodge is usually placed in a spot called Armor. This will make the Frost Tanks out there squeal because this is a VERY delicious stat to have for them, but also for the rest of us this is great as well. Armor simply decreases the amount of damage attacks do by a percentage. (The bare minimum for Tanking is around 60% for those of you wondering, but there is no way to stack armor other than trinkets so don’t worry about it.)

This being said, Blizzard decided to change out some of the stats in the Chest and Hands for the Tanking sets of all the Tanks to give us more armor. Let’s take a look at what we gained/lost, shall we?

The source of the information below can be found HERE

Chest

Before
Scourgelord Chestguard

2526 Armor
+144 Strength
+191 Stamina
Red Socket
Blue Socket
Socket Bonus: +6 Strength
Equip: Increases defense rating by 60.
Equip: Increases your dodge rating by 76.
Equip: Increases your parry rating by 76.

After
Scourgelord Chestguard

3590 Armor
+144 Strength
+191 Stamina
Red Socket
Blue Socket
Socket Bonus: +6 Strength
Equip: Increases your dodge rating by 60.
Equip: Increases your parry rating by 76.

In short, we lost 60 Drating, but gained about 1000 armor. This is a substantial change on both sides, but in my opinion for the better. 60 Drating probably will not be making/breaking most Tanks that have this gear available to them at this current time, but the 1000 Armor is a great mitigation bonus that is welcomed with open arms, especially for Frost Tanks.

Do note that nothing other than Def and Armor were tampered with in the making of this change!

Hands

Before
Scourgelord Handguards

1579 Armor
+81 Strength
+148 Stamina
Yellow Socket
Socket Bonus: +6 Stamina
Equip: Increases defense rating by 71.
Equip: Increases your dodge rating by 63.
Equip: Improves hit rating by 54.

After
Scourgelord Handguards

2461 Armor
+81 Strength
+148 Stamina
Yellow Socket
Socket Bonus: +6 Stamina
Equip: Increases defense rating by 71.
Equip: Improves hit rating by

TL;DR: A similar change happened here as well. We lost 63 Dodge for about 900 Armor. In my opinion this is an even larger bonus than the chest change. Not to say that Dodge is a bad stat to have, but because of the -20% Dodge debuff in ICC it is made even less reliable than before.

Armor on the other hand is always available for the mitigation of incoming damage. Dodge is not an extremely reliable source, it is only an estimate of how often you will dodge, meaning that 30% Dodge does not mean you will avoid 30% of all attacks. Whereas 65% reduction due to Armor is always present in every single attack.

Well played Blizzard!

Conclusion

Not a lot happened in this mini patch Death Knight Tanking-wise, but what did happen was a welcomed change. Now grab that newly improved T10 and go smack Arthas around a bit for me!

And Toralon, but that should just be a give-me regardless…

I’m not even kidding here, he gets the loot pinata award.

Yes, I took it away from Archavon!

Happy WoWing! See you next week class.
